Nova Scotia to cut civil service by five per cent annually, rein in spending as it wrestles big deficits
NDP Leader Claudia Chender warned the cuts will not be felt equally.
“This government came into a balanced budget situation, unlike many of their peers, with more revenue than any government,” said Chender.
“We don’t see an improvement in people’s cost of living, power bills are costing $400 more a month for the average family, housing is out of control and yet we’re told that Nova Scotians need to sacrifice.”
Asked how she would bring balance to the budget, Chender replied, “We would rein in the deficit by actually positioning ourselves to capitalize on economic opportunities that we’re looking at in the high-productivity jobs that exist in post-secondary (education), in innovation, to position ourselves to take advantage of the federal funding that’s coming in the defence sector.”
