It’s been such a relief to feel real warmth in the air again. This spring has brought sunshine, energy, and so many chances to connect. I’ve been out in the community more these past few weeks and I’m so grateful for the conversations I’ve had—hearing what’s on your mind helps shape the work I do, and I always appreciate the chance to listen and learn.
There are some great events coming up in Dartmouth South. On Saturday, May 31, the Halifax Defeat Depression walk/run/roll is happening at Sullivan’s Pond. Registration starts at 9:30am and the event gets underway at 10am. The goal is to raise $10,000 for Healthy Minds Cooperative, a local non-profit mental health organization doing important work in our communities. It’s a wonderful, accessible event that brings people together in support of mental health—and I hope to see you there.
We’re also excited about a free, family-friendly BBQ happening at the Dartmouth Community Fridge. It’s a chance to check out the fridge for yourself—or show your friends and family what you’ve been talking about. You can enjoy some good food, lawn games, music, and community, and see the progress on the new garden growing alongside the fridge. It’s a celebration of what we can build when we care for one another.
I also have a bit of good news about something many of you have reached out to us about: hospital parking. What healthcare workers have been dealing with—unaffordable parking, long walks after overnight shifts, and sometimes having to consider leaving their jobs altogether—is unacceptable. This isn’t just a worker issue—it’s a healthcare issue. When we don’t support the people who care for us, we all feel the impact. That’s why I’m so glad to share that beginning this afternoon our advocacy is having an impact. 175 free spaces have been made available to staff at Nova Scotia Health sites in Halifax, and parking fees in other areas will be capped at $14.50 per day. Parking will still be a struggle, but it’s a step in the right direction. Your voice matters!
