Nova Scotia legislature opens Monday. Here's where the parties stand

“We’re seeing communities struggling with everything from the cost of power to the cost of housing,” Chender said, warning that Nova Scotia may be facing the “largest deficit in the history of our province.”

Chender linked those concerns to the province’s recent credit downgrade, saying it reflects a lack of financial guardrails and that the NDP plans to introduce legislation to increase transparency.

“We will be introducing legislation to establish a legislative budget officer that can independently oversee government costing and proposed policy alternatives.”

Chender added that the party will also be proposing a lobbyist registry to better inform the public of government spending habits.

Success in the session, Chender said, would be measured by everyday improvements.
