Opinion: Nova Scotia survivors of intimate partner violence still wait for real change

Another missing piece is stable core funding for the organizations on the front lines of this epidemic. Right now, women’s centres, transition houses and advocacy groups are trapped in a cycle of chasing one-off grants and annual project funding which means time and effort that should be spent helping survivors is instead being spent filling out endless application forms.

Even the longer funding window for some organizations will soon be closing, leaving staff and survivors wondering what comes next.

Real change means shifting the systems and social norms that allow this violence to continue, and we know that can’t happen overnight. But there are concrete, tangible steps the Houston government can take right now. That includes strengthening school curriculum to teach consent and healthy relationships, updating the student code of conduct so it goes further to address gender-based and intimate partner violence, ensuring real support for survivors and frontline organizations, and expanding services that deal with men who are at risk of perpetrating violence.
