Premier asks regulator to formally investigate overbilling by Nova Scotia Power

Coincidentally (or not), the premier’s letter to the regulator was submitted on the same day that NDP Leader Claudia Chender was hosting a news conference urging Houston to take action on the billing issue, which she described as “a cascading situation” causing anxiety for tens of thousands of Nova Scotians.

Chender told reporters that what she wants is for Houston to undertake a comprehensive review of Nova Scotia Power that would be outside the regulatory sphere and structure of the Nova Scotia Energy Board. Chender was asked to explain what this review would be expected to accomplish.

“We are asking, should our electricity grid be owned by a private company that gives a 9% rate of return to their shareholders and operates on a cost recovery basis for every piece of work that they do,” Chender said. “I think many Nova Scotians are asking that question, because they don’t do a very good job. We’re out of power all the time.”
